My name is Russ Alman (obviously, since that's the name of the site). I'm a 20-year veteran of the computer and technology industry. From 1994-2007, I worked full time as a Macintosh computer consultant, first in Eugene and Springfield, Oregon, then briefly in Sarasota, Florida, and finally in the South Puget Sound area of Washington State.
The problem with being a Mac support person is that it's a lot like being a Maytag repairman: the stupid things just don't break down very much. Since I really have no desire to dive deep into the Windows troubleshooting and support world, I decided to transition from computer support and combine my technology experience with my background in web design, communications and marketing.
In 2007, I got my first taste of Facebook. I immediately knew that social media was going to be huge and I wanted to be a part of it. So I got to work learning about this brave new world and established Alternative Marketing Connections.
After about a month of tooling around, I realized that to make the social media really work well for businesses, they needed to integrate well with their websites. But so many websites out there are built on out-of-date, static technology that they can't tie well to the social media (and still are, by the way!). As a result, I decided to re-add web design to my toolkit; I threw away everything I learned in the past about building static websites in GoLive and Dreamweaver, and now focus exclusively on content-managed websites, which are easier to keep updated with fresh, SEO-friendly content. I learned Joomla first because I knew it had a bigger learning curve but was also a more powerful platform to work from, and then kind of picked up WordPress in a couple days. (The thought has crossed my mind to learn Drupal, but for my purposes, Joomla and WordPress are just fine).
Which leads me to this website. russ.alman.us was my very first WordPress site. I hadn't done any custom template creation yet, so I found this cool theme by Indeziner. Even though I could easily reskin this site at this point, I actually really like the look of this template for my pesonal blog, plus it has a certain amount of nostalgia for me.
This site is my personal blog… you might find some techie-marketing stuff here from time to time, but this is really supposed to be my place to let off steam, share humor, and just rant when I feel like it. If you want more formal blogging from me, check out my company website at altmktg.com.
So what am I doing now, 6 years after my introduction to Facebook? I am specializing in social media setup and management for small to mid-sized businesses. I set up their social media accounts, make them all consistent, and then tie them together with Hootsuite so they can manage them more efficiently. I then give my clients the option to take to reigns and manage their own social media, or I can help them manage their social media on an ongoing basis. I also help businesses establish their place pages (Google Places for example), online directory listings (like SuperPages.com) and establish ownership of their listings on review sites so they can not only be found more often online, but also have better control over their online reputation.
While my family and I spent 8 years in the Olympia, Washington area, as of December 12, 2012, we will be located in Wenatchee, Washington, thanks my wife accepting a faculty position at Wenatchee Valley College. I am continuing to grow my social media management and web design business from North Central Washington.
If you are a Mac user and do need Mac support, still do bit of that as well, although it's no longer my focus. My Mac support site is still online at macexpert.com. At least for now… know anyone that wants to buy an awesome Mac domain name, now that Apple is a contender again? The first $30K bid takes the prize
